Our Employees Are Our Greatest Asset

Mutual respect, trusting collaboration and open dialog – these values not only characterize our corporate culture but are also firmly entrenched in our Corporate Principles. Other important factors include topics such as occupational safety, health management, diversity and work-life balance. When we take these values to heart and live them out, we can produce key innovations and ensure our sustainable success.

Occupational Health and Safety

The occupational health and safety of our employees is our top priority. That is why we do everything we can to provide healthy and safe working conditions, ultimately striving for zero harm.

To bring this to life, we rely on preventive health and safety management systems, ensuring continuous improvement and accident-related data analysis. This lays the foundation for our constantly low accident rate. In 2020, we once again improved the accident rate per 1 million working hours to 2.2.*

Our occupational health and safety management systems are externally certified according to ISO 45001 in two thirds of our production sites or comparable national standards. We will extend this third party certification to all production sites and R&D centers worldwide by the end of 2021.

As an important addition to our management systems, we at BSH pursue a corporate safety culture. We empower all employees and managers to consciously assume their responsibilities and to lead by example. Binding internal policies and regulations outline these individual and shared obligations for health and safety.

The high priority given to occupational safety is also reflected in our swift response to the Covid-19 pandemic. At all our locations worldwide, we have implemented extensive hygiene and distancing rules, including the provision of medical masks free of charge. To minimize the risk of infection, we reduce personal interaction to an absolute minimum. Where possible and appropriate, we enable flexible working models. At our production sites, we manage work shifts so that only the required employees are on-site at the same time. We have also installed additional protective measures such as distance separators and Plexiglas screens.

Health Management As a Given

At BSH, we want our employees to be healthy and well. In consequence, we emphasize promoting health and preventing illness.

Thanks to the joint, interdisciplinary work of production planners, company physicians and safety engineers, high ergonomic standards play an important role already at the planning stage of new workplaces. In Germany, for example, new assembly lines ensure that older employees with health challenges can also be successfully integrated into work processes. Depending on the location in question, employees have access to a company physician as well as continuously enhanced health promotion programs.

This is also reflected in the extensive safety measures that BSH has implemented worldwide to protect all employees from a Covid-19 infection. Wherever possible, BSH employees have been working remotely since the beginning of the pandemic.

Maintaining Dialog – With all employees

Committed and satisfied employees are extremely important to us. That's why we successfully conduct an international employee survey every two years as a central tool for measuring employee satisfaction. And with great success – the participation rate of 80 percent in 2020 is proof of the very high willingness of employees to participate in future changes.

83 percent of our employees would recommend BSH as an employer. This makes us very proud!

A monitoring tool for documenting measures and following up implementation progress is available to allow work on improvements to be carried out in a sustainable manner. At the same time, this allows the worldwide exchange of best practice measures. Measures were implemented especially frequently in the topic areas of workplace, work content and work organization.

Additional tools, such as 360-degree feedback or the climate barometer for employees who are working in production, also promote mutual open dialog. We are constantly working on our feedback culture.

Different Together

The topic of diversity management is firmly anchored as a strategic sustainability topic in our Corporate Principles with the emphasis on internationality, gender and age. For us it means appreciating all of our employees – with respect to both their differences and similarities. Our conviction has therefore led us to sign the "Diversity Charter" as a public sign of commitment to diversity.
